Guyana celebrated its 50th anniversary of
independence from England, on May 26th. For the last month the country has been
getting ready for this celebration by decorating and cleaning. The whole place looks festive and patriotic!
On Tuesday my school had a flag raising
ceremony to commemorate the event. We
heard national songs and stories. And of
course we raised a flag.
Thursday a group of us left early in the morning for
Georgetown to watch the grand parade. We
got to the stadium around 9am and found seats.
The parade didn’t start until noonish but there was enough festivities
around to keep us entertained. There
were vendors for food and keepsakes alike!
The parade was different from what I am used to. Each float or group came in individually and
went to the middle of the field to show everyone their designs or groups then
walked off. This made for a slow journey
and a long day! The floats ranged from
cultural significant animals and products (jaguars, canje pheasants, and
country crest) to celebrating their British history with Queens, and
knights. There was a noticeable lack of
candy being thrown from the floats but I guess that makes since!
All in all I had a great day celebrating with Guyana! I can't wait to see what the next 50 years has in store for this great country!
